The police have made a major breakthrough in the investigation of the murder of a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer who was shot dead by suspected thugs in Kayole, Nairobi, last week.

Constable David Mayaka, who was attached to the Makadara DCI unit, was killed on the night of August 8, 2023, while he was changing a flat tyre on his car with the help of his wife, Hellen Kemunto.

According to the police, they have arrested the main suspect behind the shooting, identified as John Wanjiru, who was hiding at his grandmother’s place in Ruthingiti, Kikuyu, Kiambu County2. They also recovered a motorcycle that was allegedly used by the gang to commit the crime in Kayole3. The motorcycle had been repainted and fitted with a fake number plate to conceal its identity.

The police said that Wanjiru and his accomplices had been on a robbery spree in Kayole and other areas before they encountered Mayaka and his wife. They said that Wanjiru had a criminal record and had been released from prison recently4. They also said that they had linked him to the bullets that were used to kill Mayaka after examining the spent cartridges that were found at the scene.

So far, the police have arrested seven suspects in connection with the murder of Mayaka, and they are interrogating them to establish their roles and motives. They said that they are still pursuing other members of the gang who are believed to be armed and dangerous3. They urged anyone with information that could lead to their arrest to contact them.

The police also expressed their condolences to the family and colleagues of Mayaka, who was described as a humble and diligent officer. They vowed to ensure that justice is done for him and his wife, who was injured in the attack and is recovering at a hospital5. They also warned criminals that they will not spare them and that they will face the full force of the law.
