Suspect Who Killed DCI Officer Shoots Another Police Officer

The main suspect in the murder of an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kayole was neutralised on Tuesday morning in a fierce shootout with the police.

According to Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei, who spoke to a local media, police officers trailed the suspect for several weeks and traced him to his home in the Soweto slums in Kayole, Nairobi.

In the early hours of Tuesday, at around 5 am, a unit deployed to hunt down the wanted suspect encircled his residence and ordered him to surrender lest he faces dire consequences.

Undeterred by their order, the suspect opted to confront the officers by opening fire, forcing them to defend themselves in a fierce shootout that lasted for a considerable period of time, jolting the local residents who were asleep.

The suspect, who shot and injured one police officer, was overpowered by the unit, which was hell-bent on arresting him either dead or alive.

“One of our officers was injured and rushed to the hospital. He is now in stable condition. There was also a family at the house, but none of them was injured,” Bungei confirmed the suspect’s death.

12 rounds of ammunition and a pistol suspected to have been used by the deceased to assassinate the DCI officer on August 8 were recovered.

He added that police are actively in pursuit of a third suspect who is on the loose as investigations into the murder of the DCI police officer continue.

“We arrested another suspect, the boda rider, last week and are still looking for the third suspect. We ask him to surrender himself,” Bungei disclosed.

Officers drawn from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau apprehended the boda rider who was hiding in Ruthingiti, Kiambu County on August 15.

The suspect fled Kayole after the murder of the officer, who had stopped in the middle of the road to fix a tyre, and sought refuge at his grandmother’s home.
