Council of Governors New Leadership

The council of governors is currently holding its full council meeting to discuss what it says are issues of concern affecting county governments.

Besides discussing the unbundling and transfer of functions, the council will also hold its elections for the Executive (Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Whip) and the Chairpersons of the Technical Committees.

In its full council meeting held last year in December, the council had raised concern over alleged encroachment on devolved functions by the national government.

Chairperson Anne Waiguru had instead urged the national government to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of devolution

At the close of the devolution conference held in August this year in Uasin Gishu County, the two levels of government agreed to work in harmony with county governments at the centre of economic development with implementation of the resolutions being monitored and reported by stakeholders every six months over the next two years, and the progress reported during the next devolution conference.

Today’s meeting comes as the country’s universal health coverage agenda gathers pace with president William Ruto set to  launch community health promoters, equipped with essential knowledge and tools, during this year’s Mashujaa day celebrations with each expected to serve 100 households.

The model will create approximately 10,000 Community Health Units, forming part of a broader Primary Care Network which will be closely linked to level two and level three health facilities, providing a hub-and-spoke system with level four facilities at the center.
