Wamatangi Runs for Safety at Kiambu Event

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi was forced to prematurely end his bursary allocation event on Wednesday after angry residents disrupted the exercise, citing unfairness.

Wamatangi was presiding over the distribution of bursary cheques for primary, secondary and university students at the Kiambu County Assembly grounds. The event came at a time when the governor is facing mounting calls for his ouster, with a section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) calling for his impeachment.

The MCAs have accused Wamatangi of mismanagement of the county and belittling them. They also alleged that the bursary allocation exercise was not fair, with some residents saying that they had not received the cheques.

The chaos erupted when some residents started protesting, demanding that the cheques be given to their MCAs to distribute. They argued that it was unfair for them to have to travel long distances to collect the cheques.

Wamatangi was whisked away by his bodyguards amid the chaos, and the event was abandoned.

In a statement, Wamatangi’s office said that the governor was committed to ensuring that all eligible students received bursaries. The office said that the distribution exercise would be rescheduled and that all residents would be given an opportunity to collect the cheques.

The incident is a further blow to Wamatangi, who is already under pressure from the MCAs to resign. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to weather the storm and remain in office.
