Police Officer Arrested For Demanding a Bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commision has announced the arrest of the Head of Liquor Licensing in Githunguri Sub-County, Kiambu County Mercy Wambui following investigations into allegations that she impounded goods belonging to the complainant, a bar business operator in Kiambu County, and demanded Kes. 40,000 bribe in order to return the same.

Through a detailed Twitter thread EACC noted that on the 28 June 2023, Kiambu County Enforcement Officers, including the suspect, went to her bar business premises and found her employees stocking beverages and undertaking stock-taking for the day. The liquor licensing officials accused the complainant of opening and operating a bar before the stipulated time. They, thus, confiscated the complainant’s goods and went away with them.

According to the statement the woman was escorted to Integrity Centre Police Station where she was processed and later released on Kes. 40,000 police bail pending court appearance.
This case comes in the wake of government initiatives aimed at reducing liquor consumption especially in the Central parts of Kenya. The Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has been at the centre of this battle, hence suffice it to say that this kind of incident greatly undermines the DPs efforts.
