RUTO INTRODUCES NEW NHIF LEVY

President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration has proposed increasing monthly contributions by Kenyans towards the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

To realise the ambition of affordable and quality Universal Health Coverage, Ruto wants Kenyans compelled to contribute 2.75% of the gross salary towards health cover.

According to the proposed National Health Insurance Fund Regulations, 2023, unemployed Kenyans will pay 2.75% of their monthly income towards NHIF.

In the event that monthly income is less than KSH 300, then he/she will be required to contribute KSh 300 to NHIF.

In another drastic change, Kenyans who are not salaried and have no other source of income will pay KSh 1000 toward the health cover.

“A contributor who is not employed or listed as an indigent person or vulnerable person shall pay a monthly contribution of one thousand shillings,’ the bill states.
