The National Hospital Insurance Fund is a Kenya government state cooperation with a mandate to provide health insurance to Kenyans. The core business and mandate for Nhif is to provide accessible, affordable, sustainable and quality health insurance for all Kenyans citizens.

The Nhif membership is open to all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 years and have a monthly income. It has about 95 fully autonomous branches, satellite offices and a presence in the 47 Huduma centers across the country. National Hospital Insurance Fund was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health. The original act of Parliament that set up this Fund in 1966 has over the years been reviewed to accommodate the changing healthcare needs of the Kenyan population, employment and restructuring in the health sector.

National Hospital Insurance Fund has a target of increasing the number of principal members from 7 million to 19 million by 2022. It also enhances revenue inflow and its utilisation. To enhance compliance to good governance. Finally, it enhances synergies in information and resources sharing with stakeholders and partners.

Therefore, their mission is to contribute towards universal coverage in the provision of affordable, accessible, sustainable and quality health insurance health insurance through purchasing in collaboration with the stakeholders.

Therefore, Nhif has said that under the guidance of the Ministry of Health they have made strides in digitising the process to hasten the implementation of the UHC scale up. In collaboration with the National and County government, Nhif has registered 1005204 needy families from all 47 Counties.
