Martha Koome Finally Breaks Silence After Ruto’s Threats

Chief Justice Martha Koome has responded to President William Ruto’s recent threats against the judiciary, expressing concerns over the public criticism and demonization of judges and judicial officers.

Emphasizing the constitutional provisions safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary as an equal branch of government, she urged judges to carry out their duties impartially, citing Article 160(1) as the foundation for exercising judicial authority.

Addressing a critical issue, Koome highlighted the potential harm to citizens’ rights and legal obligations when court orders against the State are disregarded by officials.

She underscored that such actions compromise the legal system’s ability to protect citizens’ rights, ultimately undermining the fundamental right to access justice.

The Chief Justice assured Kenyans that the Judicial Standards Commission (JSC) would diligently address any claims or grievances related to alleged wrongdoing or corruption by judges or judicial officers.

Koome emphasized the JSC’s commitment to disciplining those who violate the Judicial Code of Conduct and Ethics or engage in unethical behavior. Encouraging individuals with knowledge of actions compromising legal proceedings’ fairness to bring such cases to the JSC’s attention, she pledged prompt resolutions.

In a statement, the JSC reiterated its track record in handling disciplinary matters and emphasized its readiness to address any issues jeopardizing the integrity of legal proceedings. The Commission called upon individuals to report any conduct contrary to judicial standards for swift resolution.

The information was shared via a tweet from the official Judicial Standards Commission Twitter account, providing a direct link to the statement for further reference.
