Govt Makes Sudden U-Turn on CBC

The Kenyan government implemented significant revisions to the minimal educational level that all teachers must fulfill in order to be officially authorized to teach the curriculum, which resulted in a dramatic U-turn for the competency-based curriculum.

Speaking today, November 20, 2023, through Dr. Salome Maina, Director of Teacher Education in the, the Kenyan government announced that all teachers must now possess a diploma in order to be certified to teach the CBC.

“Because of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the modifications made by the Education Ministry, all of the teachers are expected to be diploma holders. The government said that practicing teachers are expected to upgrade to satisfy the needs of the new educational system.

The mandated that all certificate-bearers advance to the diploma level before they are allowed to officially resume teaching the Competency Based Curriculum.

In a calculated effort to help students earn their diploma, the Kenyan government has also instructed all teachers who were to graduate with a certificate in Early Childhood Education (ECDE) to enroll in the one-year upgrading course.
