Salaries of Kenyan Teachers After Review

In 2023, the majority of secondary education teachers earn between Ksh26,065 and Ksh135,946 each month. Entry-level Secondary school teachers earn between Ksh26,065 to Ksh91,441 per month.

After 5 years of work experience, their monthly salary will range between Ksh40,744 and Ksh159,105.

Other than these, teachers earn depending on other factors such as job group, qualifications, experience and subjects they teach. Additionally, they get various allowances such as house, communter, hardship and even medical allowances.

New TSC grading system for teachers

The present Teachers Service Commission upgrade of teachers resulted in the elimination of some job groups and the consolidation of others. The grade previously known as P1, which was under Job Group G, was eliminated and replaced with Grade B5 under the new grading system for tutors. This grade was selected as the new entry grade for all primary school tutors. Here are the new categories and grades for teachers;

– Grade D5 T-Scale 15 – Chief Principals

– Grade D4 in T-Scale 14 – Senior Principals

– Grade D3 has T-Scale 13 – Deputy Principal I and Principals

– Grade D2 under T-Scale 12 – Senior Master I and Deputy Principal II

– Grade D1 under T-Scale 11 – here we have Deputy Principal III, Senior Master II, Senior Lecturer II, Curriculum Support Officer I, and Senior Head Educator.

– Grade C5 belonging to T-Scale 10 – Senior Master III, Deputy Principal IV, Senior Lecturer III, Deputy Head Teacher, Head Educator, and Curriculum Support Officer II.

– Grade C4 in T-Scale 9 – Senior Master IV, Special Need Education Senior Teacher for primary schools, Senior Lecturer IV, Deputy Head Educator II and Special Need Education Teacher I for secondary schools

– Grade C3 belonging to T-Scale 8 – this grade includes Secondary Educator I, Special Need Education Teacher I for primary schools, Lecturer I, Senior Teacher I, and Special Need Education Educator II for secondary schools.

– Grade C2 categorized in T-Scale 7 – these are Secondary Educator II, Senior Educator II, Lecturer II, and Special Need Education Educator in primary schools.

– Grade C1 in T-Scale 6 – it includes Primary Teacher I, Secondary teacher II, and lecturer III

– Grade B5 under T-Scale 5 – mainly Primary Educator II
