Teachers Teargassed, Arrested at TSC Headquarters

Police officers used tear gas to disperse a group of protesting teachers who were demonstrating against the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for what they saw as an unjust decision.Reports indicate that the teachers had been misled into signing transfer letters, believing they were being relocated from North Eastern due to security concerns in the area.

However, to their surprise, the teachers received interdiction letters rather than the expected transfer notices.

These interdiction letters effectively terminated their employment. The situation escalated as the protesting educators, feeling deceived and frustrated, took to the streets to voice their grievances.

In response, law enforcement employed tear gas to disband the gathering. This incident highlights the turmoil and discontent among the teaching community, reflecting a broader issue concerning job security and transparency within the education sector.

Reports indicate that one teacher has been injured during a confrontation with the police.

The injured police officer has been rushed to hospital while 10 interdicted officers have been arrested.

“You cannot come here to paralyse services. We will deal with you today,” one of the police officers was caught on camera telling the teachers.

The teachers stated that they would not budge until their grievances were heard, daring the police officers to use teargas on them.

Over 129 teachers from various parts of the country have refused to report to their workstations in North Eastern Kenya demanding improved security or transfer to safer regions.

TSC has already served 60 of the 129 teachers with interdiction letters as a disciplinary measure noting that they are paralysing education in the troubled North Eastern.

The National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Julius Melly on Sunday asked TSC to reinstate the interdicted teachers.
