She is a child of Francis Atwoli, the outspoken secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU).

While partaking in an X (formerly Twitter) challenge in which tweeps were sharing their varied experiences at the hands of their fathers, Maria revealed how protective hers is, sharing an excerpt of a WhatsApp conversation in which he scolded her for sneaking out of home to go make merry.

Maria had apparently left home without informing her father, who took issue with it.

The contents of Atwoli’s message in the WhatsApp conversation read;

“Why didn’t you talk to me before you leave for parties? You just sneak out. To me, you are a child. I must be aware of your movements as a responsible parent,”
