Kindiki Pushed to Deploy GSU to Nyanza

Nyanza Governors, including Anyang’ Nyong’o of Kisumu, James Orengo of Siaya, and Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay, have collectively called upon Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to dispatch GSU police forces to quell the ongoing conflicts in the Sondu region.

According to a joint statement obtained by a local media house, the governors expressed their frustration with the ineffectiveness of prior police efforts to restore security and order.

The statement revealed that the situation had escalated to a point where police officers stationed on the Kericho side appeared to either support the warriors involved in the clashes or turn a blind eye to their assaults on local residents.

This call for reinforcement underscores the urgency of the situation, as local authorities seek to bring peace and stability back to the troubled Sondu region.

“We strongly propose that the government urgently sends a contingent of GSU to that area to restore peace and security,” the governors stated.

The three governors elected under the Azimio La Umoja party added that the clashes in Nyakach Sub-County in Kisumu, around the Sondu market, have prevailed for the last two days.

They pinpointed the blame on the neighbouring communities in Kericho County, despite a recent warning by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) that such remarks may fuel the clashes.

Their statement further alleged that seven people were reported dead, several heads of cattle were stolen, and houses were burnt down. Challynews couldn’t not independently verify the claims. The police have also yet to release a statement on the clashes.

“The issue of the boundary between the two counties should be settled expeditiously using lawful and proper government procedures,” Nyong’o, Orengo and Wanga proposed.

President William Ruto is also yet to speak on the insecurity bedevilling the region ahead of his Nyanza tour slated to commence on Friday, October 6.
