Truth Behind Ruto Granting Himself ICC Immunity

The government has swiftly addressed allegations surrounding President Ruto’s supposed acquisition of ‘ICC immunity’. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, has spoken out following concerns raised by opposition members and human rights activists.

These concerns revolved around the notion that President Ruto had endorsed the Malabo protocol as a means to shield himself from potential punitive actions by the International Criminal Court (ICC). 

The protocol, it is claimed, paved the way for the establishment of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR), an institution that could potentially provide President Ruto with immunity from international criminal charges during his tenure.

Sing’oei however, vehemently dismissed these claims. He clarified that the recent treaty signed by President Ruto pertained to the Protocol to the Constitutive Act of the African Union, aimed at the establishment of the Pan-African Parliament. 

Notably, several organizations, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) had expressed alarm over the treaty. They argued that if ratified, the treaty could render the pursuit of justice practically impossible due to the purported immunity President Ruto might enjoy as a result.
