COUNTY MORTUARY COLLAPSED. HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED.

The Vihiga County mortuary that was under construction collapsed, killing one mason on the spot, leaving 11 others seriously injured.

The gate of the modern multi-million dollar building collapsed on Sunday, April 25, at around 9pm in Mbale. According to the county’s communications chief, 38 builders were unaware of the danger when they were at the construction site.

Eleven injured victims were rushed to Vihiga Referral Hospital with one in critical condition. The body of the deceased was kept at the hospital’s morgue. Although the cause of the collapse was not mentioned, angry residents claimed it was due to a weak foundation and pointed the finger of blame at county officials.

The building was inaugurated by county governor Wilber Ottichilo, on February 24.

Most cases of house collapsing has recently been rampant in the country. The section dealing with house construction has taken keenly the cases of building of houses without permit and most of them have been demolished around the city and other parts of the country.
