84 HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS GOES MISSING.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Wednesday, January 6, ordered a manhunt for 84 high school students whom he had discovered had not reported to the school.

While on a tour accessing the reopening exercise in Tharaka Nithi county, CS Matiang’i put the parents and the students of Kajiunduthi High School students on notice. 

“I was in a school in Tharaka Nithi where 84 students had not reported yet. We have agreed with the county commissioner, Country Director of Education mounting a manhunt for those missing students,” he stated.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to making sure that the students reported to school as he commended headteachers and principals for facilitating the process.

He observed that 311 girls from the county had been reported to have been expectant during the period when the schools were closed.

“Together with our teams on the ground with the county government, we will make sure that they also go back to school and are supported,”  he added.

The CS further urged principals and school heads not to turn away students due to school arrears.

He further drew reference to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive for all administrative officers to ensure that all the children report to school.

To ensure compliance, the government launched a door-to-door search for students still at home with parents facing arrest for keeping their children away from school.

Already, Chiefs, village elders and members of Nyumba Kumi have launched a door-to-door hunt for students who are yet to report back to school.

Headteachers have also been instructed to submit daily attendance registers to sub-county directors of education  for onward transmission to directors of primary and secondary education at the Ministry headquarters in Jogoo House.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha had earlier revealed that Coast and North Eastern regions had recorded low student reporting rates on the school reopening date.
