RUTO ENDORSES BBI

It might be baptized as a building bridges initiative but since day one BBI has taken a form of 2022 campaign tool. The success or the failure of the referendum might define the political future of our country. This is why no politician has come out openly to reject it. Their future is on the line and a hasty decision can send them into oblivion.

No one in the nation has been stressed by this BBI conversation like Deputy President William Ruto. Being on the opposite end of the handshake, everyone expected DP Ruto to be on the NO campaign by default but Ruto is a calculative man. He has been weighing if opposing BBI is worth the risk. It would be worth to note that the BBI does not impede him in any way in becoming the president of this nation. A rejection of it would be based on measuring his political might against the handshake duo or standing with wanjiku. No politician in Kenya chooses the latter.

Yesterday DP Ruto gave Kenyans a glimpse of his stand towards BBI. It is evident from his tweet that even if he might not openly support the BBI, he will not spent considerable efforts and resources campaigning against it.

“NEW article 11A in the BBI Constitution bill INTRODUCED AFTER Bomas will ANCHOR the ORDINARY PEOPLES’ Hustler economics of wheelbarrow, boda×2, mama mboga, pastoralists/butchers & GUARANTEED MINIMUM RETURNS on coffee, tea, korosho, sukari, maize. BOTTOM UP NOT TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMIC,” he tweeted.

Ruto is playing a game of politics. He is hijacking the BBI process and if ODM is not careful he might run away with it. With Itumbi by his side, he has the necessary arsenal to change the discussion about BBI. This is a man who has started taking credit of the document even before the signature collection process. A man a few weeks ago who against all odds made wheelbarrow a national conversation.

Junet Mohammed the vocal legislator and loyal soldier to Raila was quick to ensure Ruto did not hijack the BBI and take all credits for something he has been against all along. He called Ruto a liar and said that the clause had been there all along.

It will be interesting few week ahead. The BBI campaigns have been prepared with a view of Ruto opposing it. Now he is seemingly not against the BBI, maybe the politicians will do the right thing and stop political rallies to protect Kenyans instead of being super spreaders of the disease.
