A WIN FOR RUTO

What started as an improbable journey for DP Ruto is turning to be a victory. Top officials involved in the BBI popularization campaign had said that there’s no window for further amendments to the document.

It seems President Uhuru is reading from a different script. The president has opened room for a consensus building on the Constitution changes proposal through Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Speaking during the State of the Nation Address at Parliament on Thursday, November 11, the president emphasized on the need for Kenyans to reach a consensus before the document is subjected to a referendum.

“Every Journey starts with a single step, taken in faith, at times against all odds. That journey has commenced with the release of the Building Bridges Initiatives Report.”

“As we progress to the next phase of implementing the recommendations from the (BBI) Taskforce, I urge all Kenyans to, constructively and objectively, consider the recommendations therein.”

“More importantly, let us engage in positive discourse (on BBI) with a view to effecting far-reaching changes to that will address the perennial challenges we have faced as a Nation – Negative Ethnicity; inclusion; equitable development and our fight against corruption,” President Uhuru stated.

The president reiterated that the current constitution needs amendments to ensure prosperity of the nation.

“As a people, we must seize this constitutional moment to ensure that we deliver to future generations of Kenyans the country that they deserve. Kofi Annan aptly reminded us that, “The world is not ours to keep. We hold it in trust for future generations.”

“Major changes are needed to our Constitution and other laws so as to lay the foundation for the prosperous future that we seek,” the head of state stated.

The president hinted that he’s the one to take Kenya to Canaan and not his brother Raila Odinga.

“Like Moses in the Bible who sat at the top of Mount Nebo and saw the future that the people of Israel were about to Cross into the promised land, I too have seen our future.”

Ruto is on the cusp of hijacking the success of the document. If the amendments are popular with the common folk, he will be remembered as the person who heralded them.
