FORM 3 BOY STARTS A RADIO STATION

Steve Biko Odhiambo of Father Tilen Mixed Secondary School in Mbita sub-county has become a sensation not only in Nyanza but in the whole country after starting a radio station.

The boy who’s passionate in science and has juakali skills found himself with plenty of free time because of the pandemic. It’s then that he decided to start a radio station.

To make radio transmission system is made of transistors, capacitors, amplifiers and cables Steve Biko recycled materials from old radios, telephones and other electronic appliances.

Biko before started assembling the parts, he delved into physics books. After a lengthy research, he started his project on March this year.

Villagers were excited by his idea. They offered to donate gadgets like amplifier, microphone and desktop computer.

Even though the form three year boy has never visited any radio station, he has been able to make transmission.

A well-wisher has given him a smartphone in which he uses to communicate with listeners online. His radio station known as Konzer Fm is headquartered in a stalled water kiosk adjacent to Onundo Stadium.

The radio broadcasts in Dholuo and it can be heard on 106.9 and 107.0 FM. Initially, its reach was within Mbita town.

Today, Konzer FM is heard in the entire Mbita Sub-county and parts of surrounding sub-counties such as Suba, Ndhiwa and Homa Bay.

Konzer FM is the culmination of his dream which began eight years ago when he was in class four.
“Sometimes, I could lie down facing up trying to understand how transmission took place between radio sets and studios in Nairobi. That is how I started to think of how to make a radio transmission system using old electronic gadgets,” Odhiambo said. Steve aims to become an electronic engineer in future.
