Omtatah’s Latest Move Leaves Kenyans Suprised

Following a minor accident in Kisumu, Kenyans were taken aback to discover that Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah drives a relatively inexpensive car compared to his parliamentary counterparts.

Citizen Digital reported Friday morning that the senator was involved in a minor collision on Thursday evening at Ojolla area on the Kisumu – Busia road.

His saloon car, heading towards Busia, was struck by a truck ascending the steep Ojola hill towards Maseno.

The revelation of Omtatah’s modest vehicle, a Nissan AD van, sparked surprise and discussion among Kenyans online. Many found it unusual for someone of his stature to drive such a simple subcompact van, which can be purchased for as little as Ksh.600,000 and up to Ksh.900,000.

The Nissan AD van is favored by traders for its spacious boot, basic interior, and fuel-efficient engine, making it ideal for transporting goods to remote areas.

Despite being a senator entitled to an expensive car grant from Parliament, Omtatah’s choice of vehicle was viewed as a display of humility by some and a concern for safety by others.

While news anchor Ken Mijungu suggested a sleek Mercedes Benz S-Class as a more suitable option, emphasizing the senator’s importance in Kenyan politics, opinions varied among social media users. Some praised Omtatah for his apparent connection to the people, while others urged him to prioritize his safety.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Boss Allan Mwangi confirmed the accident, noting that the senator was uninjured and continued his journey.

Omtatah’s decision to drive a modest vehicle resonated with some as a sign of understanding and empathy towards ordinary citizens, contrasting with the extravagant displays often associated with political leaders.
