Over 200 People’s Lives in Danger After Gas Explosion

A tragic incident unfolded in the Mradi area of Embakasi, Nairobi, as an explosion claimed the lives of two individuals. Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura revealed that the victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.

Mwaura disclosed that a total of 222 people sustained injuries in the blast, prompting swift medical responses. Kenyatta National Hospital received 21 patients, Mama Lucy General Hospital admitted 160, Mbagathi Hospital attended to 19, Modern Komarock Hospital cared for 14, and Nairobi West Hospital treated 8 casualties.

The catastrophic event was triggered by the explosion of a gas-laden lorry with an unidentified registration number. The blast generated a massive fireball, causing a gas cylinder to collide with Oriental Godown, a facility specializing in garments and textiles. The godown was engulfed in flames, resulting in extensive damage to vehicles, commercial establishments, and numerous small to medium-sized businesses.

The impact of the inferno extended to residential areas, where houses caught fire, trapping some residents inside. Expressing condolences, Mwaura stated, “The government sends its most sincere condolences to the families of the departed souls.” He reassured that the government was actively engaged in providing assistance to the victims and working towards restoring normalcy in the affected region.

To manage the crisis, a secure command center has been established at the scene of the tragedy to coordinate rescue operations and other necessary interventions. In a cautionary note, the public has been advised to steer clear of the cordoned area to minimize disruptions to ongoing rescue missions.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident, the government remains committed to alleviating the suffering of those affected and ensuring a comprehensive response to the challenges posed by the explosion and ensuing fire.
