Kenya Railways Announces Major Changes to SGR Operations

Kenya Railways has made changes to Standard Gauge Railways (SGR) operations following heavy rains that have paralysed transport and essential services in the area.

In a statement on Saturday, Kenya Railways closed a section of the SGR corridor between Mombasa Terminus and Mariakani, which experienced a landslide.

According to the Kenya Railways, all freight trains were banned until the issue is resolved.

However, Kenya Railways will allow passenger trains to pass through the section but under limited speed restrictions and strict supervision.

KR urged passengers to bear with the situation as the changes would occasion delays in the departure and arrival of passenger trains at Mombasa Terminus.

“Kenya Railways would like to assure our esteemed customers that works are already ongoing to restore normal services as soon as possible,” read part of the statement. 

“Our emergency plan has also been enhanced to respond to any issues arising from the acts of Mother Nature as fast as possible while ensuring safety is not compromised.”

The corporation further explained that it’s committed to ensuring the safety of the passengers who depart and arrive on schedule. 

“We would like to affirm that safety and reliability remain at the core of our operations. We understand the importance of ensuring that our passengers arrive and depart on schedule and that cargo is delivered safely and on time,” KR added. 

“We remain committed to keeping you updated throughout this process. Your patience and understanding during this time is greatly appreciated. We regret any inconvenience.”

The changes highlight the current situation in the Coast region, which has experienced floods, resulting in the disruption of transport services.
