Maandamano is Back

A group of student leaders has declared their unwavering commitment to stage a nationwide demonstration against the exorbitant cost of living at universities across the country.

During a crucial meeting with Azimio leaders, including Raila Odinga, the charismatic leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the student leaders confirmed that the protests will proceed as planned, with new dates finally announced.

The student leaders expressed their disappointment with the lack of action from the main opposition and called upon politicians to join their cause.

“We extend an invitation to stand with us on the designated day,” stated a representative of the student leaders during a roundtable discussion held in Nairobi.

The focal point of their discontent lies in the current university funding model, which the student leaders have openly criticized.

They are demanding a comprehensive review of the model unveiled by President William Ruto in May 2023 and subsequently launched by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu two months later.

The government’s introduction of the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal, aimed at providing direct financial support to students, has sparked outrage among university students. They are adamant that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) should be retained and reformed.
