Nairobi Politicians in War With DCI

A section of Nairobi MCAs has continued to condemn the DCI over last month’s investigation at City Hall.

Nairobi City County Assembly  Majority Chief Whip Moses Ogeto on Wednesday slammed the DCI for overstepping on their mandate in the stalled Cityhall investigations.

According to Ogeto, the DCI was performing EACC functions by prematurely conducting investigations of economic crimes in City Hall.

“Article 79 of the constitution stipulates the duties and roles of EACC we feel that they must again redefine their roles. They should give EACC time and space to do their job,” he said.

Ogeto emphasised that as much as he supports and respects the role of DCI, they should not duplicate duties.

” They must do their job according to the law and let it be clear that we are not against their role but as the ODM party leader puts it, let’s not weaponize our institutions,” he added.

“Many corruption cases have stalled because of the shoddy job done and politicization of the process,” Ogeto added.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers last month were at city hall as they conducted investigations linked to payments made to a number of firms.

DCI said the Nairobi County government is alleged to have fraudulently made payments to nine companies yet no services were rendered. 

They even carted away crucial documents at City Hall.

The DCI officers also questioned some clerks at the legal and finance departments as part of the investigation.

Former Nairobi County Attorney Lydiah Kwamboka and County Finance Chief Officer Asha Abdi were both questioned by detectives and recorded statements.

The DCI is yet to reveal to the public the progress of the investigations at Cityhall that focused on alleged fraudulent payments to some companies.
