Bad News To Teachers as August Salary Delay is Announced

Teachers in Kenya are waiting to receive their August salaries, which have been delayed due to ongoing negotiations between their unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over a pay increase.

The TSC has not released teachers’ pay slips yet because it is waiting to see if it can reach an agreement with the unions. If the parties agree on a deal, teachers will receive an improved package backdated to July 1, 2023. However, if the unions refuse to sign, teachers will be paid their old salaries.

The unions are demanding a wage increase of between 7 and 10 percent, which is higher than the 2.4 to 9.5 percent increase offered by the TSC. They also want the lowest paid teachers to receive the highest increase, while those in higher grades receive the least.

The unions have been meeting with the TSC over the past week, but no deal has been reached yet. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for today.

The delay in releasing teachers’ salaries is causing some financial hardship for teachers, who are already struggling to make ends meet. The unions are urging the TSC to release the pay slips as soon as possible, regardless of whether or not an agreement is reached.
