Makueni Speaker Arrested

Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu has been arrested.

The second-term Speaker was arrested after he surrendered himself to Makueni Police Station on Monday, July 24.

Makueni sub-county police commander Winfred Siele confirmed the arrest.

“He was arrested this morning,” Siele told the Star by phone on Monday.

She, however, didn’t disclose details of the politician’s arrest.

Independent sources privy to the incident told the Star that the Wiper politician had earlier been summoned by the DCI to present himself to the police station.

β€œHe was being pursued by the police since last week. He had been summoned by the DCI which is why he presented himself to the authorities this morning,” the source said.

Mbilu is said to have been whisked in a waiting police land cruiser at the police station before it sped off to an undisclosed destination.

The reason for the politician’s arrest remains unknown with speculations that it could be in connection to last week’s anti-government demonstrations by Azimio supporters in the county.

His arrest comes two days after his bodyguard Joram Kaunga was released from custody.

Kaunga was arrested on Friday, and detained at Makueni police station before being released on Saturday. He wasn’t arraigned in court.

Makueni County Assembly majority leader Francis Munyau was also arrested last Friday and arraigned in Makindu Law Courts where he was released on Sh100,000 cash bail.
