Ugly Effects of Day 1 Protests as 45 Casualties Are Reported

The anti-government demonstrations called by opposition leader Raila Odinga turned chaotic as police battled protesters in various parts of the country.

Day one of the anti-Kenya Kwanza government protests on Wednesday, July 19, left a trail of destruction.

Like the previous protesters, the Inspector General of Police had declared the protest illegal, setting the stage for a violent clash between the police and protesters.

According to Citizen TV, the violent skirmish left seven people dead across the country, with over 38 injured.

In Nairobi, three people were shot dead by police, with three others nursing serious gunshot injuries in Mathare and Kibra.

In Nakuru county, one person was allegedly shot dead by the anti-riot police, while nine others were injured.

Migori, Kisumu and Makueni recorded one protest dead each, and 21 people were left with serious gunshot wounds.

The protester killed in Makueni, Emali area was allegedly shot in the chest by the police.
