GOVT DE-REGISTERS PASTOR EZEKIEL AND MACKENZIE’S CHURCHES.

The government has initiated the process to deregister the New Life Church of Pastor Ezekiel Odero and the Good News International ministries of Paul Mackenzie.

According to the registrar of societies Jane Joram, the government has sent 30-day cancellation notices to the religious outfits, which are thought to be operating outside the law.

The two churches and their leaders are currently under investigation following the Shakahola deaths, after their followers engaged in cult-like practices.

The government has asked Good News International church to show cause why the church’s registration should not be cancelled. Ironically, for the church which is run by Odero, Mackenzie is listed as the chairperson.

It has been revealed that in 2022, Mackenzie’s church sought to change its name and officials but this was rejected.

Currently, there are 40,000 faith-based registered religious organizations in Kenya and about 100,000 registered societies under the Societies Act.

The office of Attorney General Justin Muturi has defended itself against any wrongdoing, claiming that they have only offices in 14 regions.

“We (registrar’s office) only have offices in 14 regions. If we were in Kilifi may we would have noticed what was happening,” Muturi said.
