POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR TEARING BBI SIGNATURE BOOKLET

A police officer was on Wednesday, December 2 arrested for tearing and then throwing into the river a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) signature booklet.

Kipreres sub-location assistant chief Robert Katam, who reported the matter, said that the officer identified as Peter Langat asked for the booklet saying that he wanted to append his signature.

However, upon receiving the book, the officer tore two pages of serial number; 0685180 and 0685183 and tossed it into a nearby river.

“The reportee managed to retrieve the book from the stream and rushed to the station where he reported the matter. He indicated that the book was already soaked in water and the two pages were torn.”

“Once the officer was asked of his Service Number he refused to disclose but he said that he is attached at Bungoma Police Station which is yet to be confirmed,” reads a police statement.

The authorities said that the motive as to why the officer committed the act is still unknown.

Langat was arrested at his home in Lelelkwet village in Bomet County while appearing very drunk.

He is set to be arraigned in court today.

The national signature collection drive for the amendment of the 2010 Constitution is set to end today.

BBI Secretariat co-chair Junet Mohammed said they had already collected over four million signatures in support of the initiative as of Wednesday, December 2.

The secretariat will verify the signatures before submitting the booklets to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for verification and processing.

The team was targeting four million signatures even though only one million valid signatures are required.
