Police Storms Raila’s Birthday Party, Fires Live Bullet

Celebrations marking Raila Odinga’s 79th birthday in Nairobi’s Central Business District took a chaotic turn as police, clad in anti-riot gear, disrupted the peaceful gathering outside the National Archives.

According to a statement by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), tear gas canisters and live bullets were fired into the air by the National Police Anti-Riot Unit, leaving the celebratory event in disarray.

ODM Communications Director Peter Etale revealed that the police, led by the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) for Central, targeted peaceful Kenyans waiting to commemorate Raila Odinga’s birthday.

Etale expressed uncertainty about injuries, stating, “We can’t tell (whether anyone is injured) because they were just shooting at anyone and everyone on site. The intention was just to scuttle the whole thing.”

Raila Odinga, leader of Azimio la Umoja, had planned an extensive schedule for his birthday celebrations, with events held nationwide.

However, the disruption in Nairobi cast a shadow over the festivities. The ODM leader had celebrated his birthday earlier in the day with children in Malindi, emphasizing a series of events aimed at marking the occasion.

The disruption prompted ODM to issue a statement explaining the symbolism behind nationwide cake-cutting ceremonies, scheduled to take place at 3:00 pm.

The act was described as a representation to “cut the cost of living and make life bearable for Kenyans.” Despite the chaos in Nairobi, similar celebrations were planned in various locations, including Kisii, Siaya, Meru, Mombasa, Kitengela, Kwale, Narok, and Kisumu.

The incident highlights the tension surrounding political events in Kenya and raises concerns about the use of force during peaceful gatherings. ODM’s condemnation of the police’s actions underscores the need for dialogue and respect for citizens’ right to assemble peacefully.

As Raila Odinga’s birthday celebrations continue, the disruptive events in Nairobi serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining a balance between political expression and public safety in Kenya. The aftermath of this incident may spark discussions on law enforcement practices and the protection of citizens’ rights during political events.
