Senate Makes Major Decision on Kawira’s Impeachment

During a late evening session in the National Senate, presided over by Speaker Amason Kingi, a critical decision was made regarding the impeachment proceedings against the embattled Meru Governor, the honorable Kawira.

The Senate had to determine whether the governor would face the entire house or a select committee during the impeachment hearing.

Ultimately, the Senate decided that Governor Kawira would face the committee of the entire house, or plenary, in contrast to a previous hearing where she appeared before a special select committee led by Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale.

This decision marked a significant victory for the governor, as women members of the Senate played a pivotal role in advocating for the plenary approach.

They contended that if a committee was selected, it might not adequately represent women’s interests in the impeachment process.

Given that the governor is a woman, they expressed a strong desire to actively participate in scrutinizing the allegations, aiming to determine whether they were based on genuine concerns or constituted a witch hunt.

Nominated Senator Mutinda articulated this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of having a plenary hearing: “As a female governor, we want plenary. We want to understand; is it leadership or other issues in this county. We want all the voices in this to be heard.”

Their stance underlined their commitment to ensuring that women’s perspectives were given due consideration and that the process remained fair and transparent. The decision to opt for the plenary format demonstrated a dedication to inclusivity and thorough examination of the governor’s case.
