Malala’s Position in UDA Party Hangs in the Balance as His Replacement Is Proposed

Cleophas Malala, the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, finds himself in a challenging situation, as Kakamega Senator Bony Khalwale has initiated a petition for his removal from office.

In this move, Senator Khalwale alleges that Malala has been exploiting his position to advance his personal interests, often at the expense of the party’s other members.

In response to the petition, Malala has chosen to downplay its significance, interpreting it as a testament to the party’s commitment to democratic principles.

During a press conference on Wednesday, he acknowledged that more petitions may be forthcoming, especially in the lead-up to the party’s scheduled elections in December of this year. He reassured that they are fully prepared to address any such challenges.

Adding to Malala’s woes, two UDA founding members are vying for his position, as a faction within the party has lost confidence in his leadership.

Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, has been put forward as a potential replacement, backed by members who believe he can steer the party in a better direction. Furthermore, Nominated Senator Veronica Maina, a former occupant of the same role, is also eyeing the influential position she once held before Malala assumed it.

The turmoil within UDA is not limited to internal disagreements. Some members of Parliament from the western region, such as Kimilili Member of Parliament Didymus Baraza, have accused Malala of being a supporter of the rival Azimio la Umoja alliance.

These internal divisions come at a critical time, as some key allies of President William Ruto are concerned that the upcoming elections should be postponed to avoid a scenario in which newcomers challenge the established leadership.

On the other hand, there are those who advocate for proceeding with the elections as planned, arguing that there is no perfect moment for party elections.

The future of the ruling party now hangs in the balance, with the brewing storm within its ranks raising questions about its ability to weather the challenges it faces.
