Oparanya Speaks on Joining President Ruto

ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya has rejected Kenya Kwanza’s overtures to join their coalition. Oparanya, who was arrested on Wednesday alongside his wives over alleged embezzlement of Sh1.3 billion shillings, said he will remain loyal to his party ODM.

Speaking at the memorial service of Byrum Makokha at Ibubi Girls’ Secondary School in Luanda subcounty, Oparanya said Kenya Kwanza should be content with the support of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula, who have already defected from ODM.

“You can’t force me to join your coalition,” Oparanya said. “I am in ODM and I will remain in ODM.”

Oparanya said he has served in public office for 25 years and has never been accused of corruption. He accused Kenya Kwanza of using his arrest as a political weapon to try to force him to join their coalition.

“Whether you jail me for the next 100 years or not, no amount of threats will bring me down,” Oparanya said. “I am a man of integrity and I will not be intimidated.”

Oparanya’s rejection of Kenya Kwanza’s overtures is a blow to the coalition, which is hoping to win the support of Western Kenya voters. Mudavadi and Wetangula are both popular figures in the region, but Oparanya is also a well-respected politician. His decision to remain in ODM could make it more difficult for Kenya Kwanza to win the support of Western Kenya voters.
