Kitui MP Faces This Punishment After Beating Up KPLC Officer.

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has slammed Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai for beating up a Kenya Power engineer for allegedly disconnecting an illegal power line at the MP’s home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

IEK President Erick Ohaga in a statement on Tuesday criticized the lawmaker for the act which was captured in a now-viral video, terming his behaviour an ‘intimidation to their workers’ as they called for the apprehension of the MP.

“Our attention is drawn to a video clip capturing the MP for Kitui East, humiliating and assaulting an engineer, a member of staff of Kenya Power for purportedly leading a team in removing illegal power poles and installations within the vicinity of the MP’s home in Kitengela,” read the statement.

“In the clip, the assailant MP is captured using unacceptable language towards the engineer and his team in front of other employees and onlookers. This unwarranted intimidation, harassment, and vicious assault towards the engineer in the course of his duty is an unacceptable affront to the whole engineering fraternity and in particular, to the esteemed members of the Institution of Engineers.”

IEK added: “We condemn in the strongest terms possible the actions of the Member of Parliament for Kitui East and demand that he faces the full force of the law for his unlawful conduct towards the Kenya power engineer.”

Citing the incident in the clip where the MP was captured attempting to draw out a gun as he hurled insults before repeatedly slapping the engineer, the Institution consequently called for the revocation of the firearm ownership license of the MP.

Ohanga argues that his conduct and aggressiveness towards their staff pose a threat to the general public.

“We also demand that the relevant authority in charge of licensing of firearms by civilians move in swiftly and dispose the assailant of his license to carry arms and permanently bar him from being a licensed arm holder,” stated IEK.

President Ohaga defended the assaulted engineer who he said was lawfully undertaking his duties noting that the construction of illegal and substandard power lines has been linked to electrical accidents and loss of lives.

He, therefore, faulted the legislator for employing an unlawful mechanism instead of following the rightful channel in addressing his grievances with the company.

“The construction of illegal and substandard power lines by unqualified people has caused serious electrical accidents, damage to property and loss of lives and this must be brought under control,” said Ohaga.

“The Institution upholds the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya and adherence to the rule of law to resolve grievances and disputes arising in society.”

The Institution has thus urged Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to ensure security is provided to its workers in their line of duty.

“In the same vein, we call upon the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security to our members as they perform their duty to society all over the country,” stated Ohaga.
