HIGHSCHOOL WHERE BOYS WEAR SKIRTS

The appearance of male students at a school in Uganda wearing “skirts” as part of the required attire sparked discussions on social media.

People have been wondering why male students at Nyakasura School, a mixed boarding and day high school in Uganda’s Western region, are wearing’skirts,’ against the norm.

The school principal, on the other hand, has come out to clear the air, claiming that people are misinterpreting the concept behind their school uniform.

According to the school principal, the skirt-like attire is actually a kilt, a traditional Scottish men’s attire.

He revealed that the school was founded in 1926 by Ernest William Calwell, a Scottish missionary who settled in the area during the colonial period.

“They are not skirts they are called Kilt as garment resembling a skirt traditionally worn by men in the Scottish culture,” he said.

“This school has a great history but the history is linked to Scotland and Colwell came to this area because of disagreements because he wanted to introduce this to schools but people called the skirts but they are not skirts they are called kilts.”

Despite encountering culture shock upon enrolling at the institution, a Form Four student says that he got accustomed to the dress code as he later understood the concept behind it.

“Normally when I talk about my uniform and when they see students putting on a kilt. Most of the time they say that we are dressed like girls but for me I have no problem with it because I have live with it for four years,” he said.
