LUPITA NYON’GO SHOCKED AFTER LEARNING THIS ABOUT HER DAD

Actress Lupita Nyong’o, was met with shock after learning about her father, Anyang Nyong’o survival story through the Kenyan political sphere.

According to Ancestry, an American company which helps individuals understand their genealogy, Lupita had gone to inquire about her father’s political history since it had always remained unclear to her.

It was during an interview with Ancestry when the 39-year-old learnt that Prof  Nyong’o was an activist during the reign of President Moi, who was then an autocratic leader.

She discovered that her father also a professor of Political Science devoted to nurturing democracy in Kenya.

However in 1980, Prof Nyong’o’s younger brother Charles mysteriously went missing.

According to reports which the family remained skeptical about, Charles fell off a ferry boat. The family believed that he was pushed off the ferry to intimidate Prof  Nyong’o.

Reminiscent Lupita said that after the loss, even mentioning Charles’ name was prohibited.

“Well for a long time we weren’t really allowed to say his name. His name was always said in harsh tones and stuff. It was definitely a major loss to my family,” she said.

In fear of a subsequent occurrence, Prof Nyong’o fled to Mexico city where Lupita was born in 1983. He was employed as a university professor.

However, Prof Nyong’o was still itching for a return to his homeland to continue championing for reforms.

In 1987 he returned back to Kenya with his family despite the risks.

“My father is so passionate about the country and he so deeply believes that there is a better future and I know that he feels most useful when he is there,” said Lupita noting that the return was even overdue.

In his homeland in Kisumu, Prof Nyong’o resumed his activism by organising a new movement to oppose Moi. They operated underground since it was illegal.

In an interview transcript seen by Ancestry, Prof Nyong’o gave his experience on the secretive meetings.

“We started organising the National Democratic Party, July 1987 to conceptualize the whole thing was happening here in my house,” read the transcript.

Lupita on her part said that now she understands why she always saw a team of unfamiliar people in their house.

“Now it explains why all those people were there having tea all the time. I was four at the time.”

Prof Nyong’o was later seized after the government learnt about the secret meetings and taken to the Nyayo house torture Chambers where he was held for 26 days.

“I didn’t understand what was going on and I was gone for a while. I remember the day he came back I just jumped into his arms… He is my hero,” noted the stunned Lupita

Prof Nyong’o would years later be elected senator for Kisumu county during the 2013 General Election and Governor in 2017.
