WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE BECAUSE OF CHURCH DEBT

Somber mood engulfed Nyamaroka village in Rongo, Migori County after a 60-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide over a church debt amounting to Ksh.20,000.

Confirming the incident, area Assistant Chief Eddy Onyango said the body of the deceased, identified as Ruth Akinyi Ogola, was on Monday afternoon, November 30 found hanging from a rope outside her kitchen.

The administrator told the media that the deceased, who was a church treasurer decided to take her own life after failing to refund Ksh20,000 church money she had used.

The chief said the deceased’s son had sold a cow for Ksh.15,000 to help his mother pay back part of the money.

Elsewhere, a National Youth Service (NYS) cadet has been charged with stealing alcoholic drinks worth Ksh25.6 million.

John Gatuiku Macharia is accused of stealing 1,840 units of Konyagi, 3,534 units of Faxe and 176 units of Turbong and 788 units of Redbull from Patiala Distillers Limited.

The suspected is said to have stolen the products between January 1, 2018 and November 23, 2020.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges before Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku was freed on a Ksh500,000 cash bail after claiming he was due to sit exams this December.
