Murunga died on Saturday night after developing breathing complications while being rushed to a local hospital in the region.

There was no immediate confirmation on reports that he succumbed to COVID-19 that has felled more than 1,200 people in the country since March.

The MP had been receiving treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu until last week when he was discharged.

The MP has been eulogized by many especially from his compatriots in the national assembly and Kenyan political sphere. Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya was the first person to eulogize him.

I am deeply saddened by his death which has robbed Kakamega a focused leader whose contribution in development of our county will be missed,” he said.

The head of State joined Kenyans in sending a message of condolence to the first time MP

“In this hour of sorrow, I convey my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Hon Murunga’s family, relatives and the people of Matungu Constituency. My thoughts and prayers are with you,” the President said.

Deputy President who was a key ally to the MP also send his message of condolence.

“We are heartbroken by the death of Matungu MP Justus Murunga Makokha. He was a focussed, hardworking and visionary leader who relentlessly advocated for the empowerment of the people,” he posted.

“A development-oriented titan who was dedicated to public service, Mheshimiwa Murunga was steadfast, amiable and loving. We will miss his firmness, wise counsel and vibrancy to unite and transform Western region.

Our thoughts and prayers to the Makokha family, their loved ones and the people of Matungu Constituency. Rest In Peace, Mheshimiwa,” he added.

Today members of Parliament visibly cried as they remembered one of their own.
