Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics: Kenya’s Track Prodigy Shares How He Plans to Mine Gold
The Kenyan medal prospect has outlined his ambitions to conquer the world during the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
Kenya has sent one of the biggest delegations to the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal but just a few will bring back medals.
At the youth event, set to take place from October 31 to November 13, Team Kenya will have 53 athletes, 43 girls and 10 boys, competing in 13 disciplines in what is the fourth edition of the Games.
Among them are seven from track and field who, like in previous editions, are expected to deliver medals.
Kenya has won a total of 15 medals at the Summer Youth Olympics, eight gold, three silver, and four bronze, all from athletics and in Dakar, this likely to be the case.
That means the athletes selected have the weight of expectations on their shoulders even though they are still very young.

However, among them are some who already know how to win medals on a global stage and will hope to use their experience to deliver success in Senegal.
One of them is 16-year-old David Kapaiko, who will be running the 800m at the Youth Olympics.
“The way I have been training, I feel that gold will come. I am even motivated to train more when I hear them say I am a gold medal prospect,” Kapaiko told Pulse Sports.
Kapiko heads to the Youth Olympics on the back of two successful seasons as he is a gold medalist from the Africa School Games, Africa Youth Games and Eastern Africa Athletics Regional Championships, all which took place in 2025.
This year, he retained his African Youth Games crown before winning silver at the 2026 World U20 Athletics Championships. This is besides running at the Kip Keino Classic and in the Commonwealth Games trials, events he says gave him plenty of experience.

“I have been watching what Emmanuel Wanyonnyi does in the 800m and what Timothy Cheruiyot does in the 1500m. I worked with some of them in the Commonwealth trials,” he added.
Kapaiko has won most of his medals in the 1500m but 800m is a race he has slowly been getting accustomed to and his coach Edcain Mutua feels it will not be long before he hits the heights of some of Kenya’s greats.
“When you look at how David Rudisha used to run and look at David [Kapaiko], he is so focused. He does not look behind or at the fans,” said Mutua, who has been working with Kapaiko since he was 13.
“In 1500, when you look at the way Asbel Kiprop used to run, he stayed with the leading pack and it helped him get a good time. Stay with them, maintain your pace and balance. When you get to the point your coach has said you take off, kick and win gold,” added the tactician.
Kapaiko is a member of coach Mutua’s Emali Athletics Camp and they have been working closely to sharpen him for what awaits him in Dakar with hopes of not just winning gold but also lowering his 800m personal best from of 1:50.21 to between 1:45 and 1:46.

Ballon d’Or: Harry Kane and Other English Players Who Have Won the Prestigious Award
The Bayern Munich forward captured the 2027 Ballon d’Or Award but which other Englishman has captured the accolade?
Harry Kane has etched his name into football history after claiming the 2026 Ballon d'Or at a prestigious ceremony in London.
Marking the 70th edition of the award, the England captain became only the fifth Englishman ever to collect the sport's highest individual accolade, ending a 25-year drought for his country.
The honour rewarded the most prolific individual campaign of Kane's career. Finishing as the top goalscorer across Europe, the forward registered a staggering 73 goals in 65 matches for club and country.
His 61 goals for Bayern Munich propelled the German side to a domestic sweep of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. On the international stage, Kane contributed 12 goals as he captained the Three Lions to a third-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sir Stanley Matthews became the inaugural recipient of the European Footballer of the Year award in 1956. The Blackpool winger pipped Real Madrid icons Alfredo Di Stefano and Raymond Kopa to the prize after inspiring his club to second place in the First Division—their highest league finish in a quarter of a century. At 41 years of age, Matthews remains the oldest winner in the history of the award.
A decade later, Sir Bobby Charlton became the second English player to receive the honour in 1966. The Manchester United talisman was recognised after orchestrating England's triumph at the 1966 FIFA World Cup on home soil.
Charlton netted three goals during the tournament, including a decisive brace in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, before earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament as the hosts overcame West Germany 4-2 in the final.
Kevin Keegan joined the exclusive list in 1978 while playing abroad for Hamburg. The forward retained the crown in 1979 after leading the German club to their first Bundesliga championship since 1960.
Keegan remains the only Englishman to have captured the Ballon d'Or in back-to-back years, aided by a 17-goal league haul in 1978-79 that featured 11 strikes in the final 12 fixtures.
Michael Owen became the fourth English winner in 2001 following a remarkable campaign with Liverpool.
Owen played a pivotal role in Liverpool collecting five major trophies that calendar year, including an FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup treble. His defining moments included a dramatic late brace to defeat Arsenal 2-1 in the FA Cup final, as well as a historic hat-trick in England's 5-1 World Cup qualifier victory against Germany in Munich.
Owen finished ahead of Real Madrid's Raul and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn to become the first Liverpool player to lift the trophy.
