A BBC doctor has given an update on so-called ‘American Covid’ – the prevalent XFG variant which is sweeping the UK causing an increase in hospitalisations this season – and said there are specific symptoms to watch out for. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) monthly figures show in October a total of 8,518 people contracted Covid, a 40 per cent increase on September which saw 5,201 cases overall.

A total of 1,847 Covid-19 cases were identified in hospital settings in the seven days up to 27 October, decreasing from 2,151 cases in the previous week, according to the latest UKHSA data.

Although weekly cases have declined, the number of deaths recorded in the week to October 16 increased by 25 per cent to 69 from 55 the previous week.

Appearing on BBC Morning Live this week Dr Ranj Singh said: “Many people will have heard of so-called American COVID. It’s being used to describe the XFG variant, which is a Omicron descendant. No evidence at the moment that it’s any more serious than other Omicron descendants. COVID, it’s it’s the SARS KV2 virus. Respiratory spread again much like other viruses.”

He said infections were ‘mild to moderate’ for most people but warned it could be severe in particular groups, especially the vulnerable.

The UKHSA said: “XFG – sometimes referred to in the media as the Stratus variant – remains the most common current COVID-19 variant. XFG has also been referred to as ‘American Covid’ in some media coverage.

“The name reflects where the strain was first sequenced and detected, rather than necessarily where it originated.”

Dr Singh reminded people of three key symptoms which could indicate people have Covid rather than other seasonal illnesses. He said: “Remember for this um the loss of smell and taste. And also the gastrointestinal symptoms are quite predominant in COVID.”

For preventing American Covid, Dr Singh said people should consider masks: “Prevention again we’ll talk about ventilation really important, hygiene is really important. Masks in high-risk situations, especially if you’re around very very vulnerable people and again COVID vaccination is being offered to certain high-risk groups.”

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data shows that COVID-19 positive test rates rose to around 7% in September, with hospital admission rates increasing by approximately 50% over the same period. UKHSA said increases have been observed consistently across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as across Europe and the United States, ‘indicating this is not a localised trend’.

It added: “Current data does not indicate that these variants lead to more severe illness than other variants in circulation. UKHSA monitors a range of surveillance systems, including GP appointments, A&E attendances and hospitalisations, alongside genomic sequencing, to track how variants are behaving.

“As increases in hospitalisations are rising in line with overall increases in COVID-19 circulation – rather than rising sharply on their own – this suggests a general increase in COVID-19 activity rather than a variant causing more severe disease.”

In terms of explaining the increase the UKHSA said: “There are likely to be several factors behind the current rise. As we move into winter, colder and wetter weather means people spend more time indoors, which enables the spread of respiratory viruses. It has also been roughly a year since the last significant COVID-19 wave, so immunity from vaccination and previous infection may be waning in parts of the population, making people more susceptible.”

UKHSA says if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to go to work or carry out normal activities, you should avoid contact with vulnerable people and stay at home if possible. For those of us who absolutely can't stay at home, the guidance remains unchanged, and will reduce the chance of passing on your infection to others:

Brad Pitt's and Angelina Jolie's daughter Vivienne becomes fourth child to drop his name

A California judge has approved Vivienne’s petition to drop her father's last name.

Following the hearing on 2 November, the 18-year-old now goes by ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie’ officially, rather than ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt’.

As reported by Page Six, Judge Virginia Keeny told the Los Angeles Superior Court: “There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted.”

“The Decree is signed and filed,” the order adds. “The Petitioner’s name is changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.”

Vivienne joins Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh who have taken only their mother’s surname.

Brad Pitt, 62, and Angelina Jolie, 51, share six children: Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 18.

In the petition filed in July, Vivienne lists the reason for the name change as ‘personal’, according to a court document obtained by Page Six.

“I have six very individual human beings in my home. I am so excited about all the different stages and feelings and curiosities that they go through. Why wouldn’t you be?” Jolie told PEOPLE in 2021.

“We’re supposed to help them figure out who they are. And you can’t figure out who they are if you don’t enthusiastically develop with them.”

Just two years after tying the knot with Pitt, Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, alleging that the F1 actor was abusive towards one of their kids during a private flight.

Three years on, the pair were officially divorced but their assets and child custody were still being decided.

It took until 2024 for both parties to finally reach a settlement.

One of the reasons why it took so long is because shortly after Jolie's divorce filing in 2016, Pitt was investigated by the The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) over allegations of abuse.

Both organisations dropped their investigations and didn't file any charges.

However, the former couple are still locked in an active legal battle over the French winery Château Miraval.

Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 after she sold her 50% share of the $164 million estate to Tenute del Mondo (the wine division of the Stoli Group, owned by Yuri Shefler) without his consent, claiming it violated a prior agreement.

Jolie countersued, alleging Pitt waged a vindictive campaign against her following their 2016 split.

A California court and appeals court have issued a series of rulings favoring Pitt, including ordering depositions from Stoli Group and Tenute del Mondo executives and reviving claims against Shefler in California.

Pitt's legal team has been pushing to examine Jolie's financial and tax records dating back to 2017, which her lawyers have opposed as an invasion of privacy.

The broader litigation involving the winery and the third-party buyers continues to move forward toward trial.

Mikel Arteta once delivered a stark warning to Viktor Gyokeres as the Arsenal boss considers his options following the striker's disappointing start to the season. Despite the Gunners getting off to a flying start in their title defence, Gyokeres has found the net just once so far.

That solitary goal came in the embarrassing Carabao Cup exit at Fleetwood. As reported by Mirror Football, Arsenal have made recruiting a top-quality forward their primary objective in January.

Arteta has placed attacking reinforcements at the top of his agenda, viewing fresh firepower as essential to mounting a challenge across all competitions. That is a damning reflection on Gyokeres, putting his future at the Emirates firmly in question.

As a potential replacement, the Gunners are believed to have identified Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi as a target, though the Cherries would be reluctant to let him go in the next transfer window. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the exciting Frenchman, 20.

Arsenal retain a long-standing interest in Juventus' Kenan Yildiz, while fresh uncertainty surrounds Vinicius Junior's long-term future at Real Madrid following the Gunners' summer pursuit of the Brazilian, though a winger remains a secondary priority behind securing a versatile forward.

All of which leaves Gyokeres glancing nervously over his shoulder with reminders of his first encounter with Arteta, who bluntly warned the Swede that he would need to weather goal droughts if he were to succeed at Arsenal.

Make sure you don't miss the best Arsenal coverage by making the Daily Mirror one of your Google preferred sources.

Following his stuttering start to last season, the Gunners boss said: "I told him before the first meeting, I said, 'The nine that I want is a nine that when he doesn't score for six or eight games, he can handle that.

"'If not, you have to go somewhere else because the expectation is going to be there.' So, if you put on a nine shirt for Arsenal, you have to be able to say, 'OK, six games, if I don't score, I'm a different player? I start to act in a different way?'

"No, I want much more of the same of what he's doing. You see the history of the number nines. You're going to have moments like this.

"He brings so much to the team. He creates space and solutions to a lot of the players around him. And with the talent that we have in the team, I'm sure that everybody, him included, will benefit from that."

Gyokeres stayed on the bench for most of Sunday's triumph at Liverpool before coming on as a late substitute for match-winner Kai Havertz. With fixtures coming thick and fast, he'll be eager to feature from the off in Wednesday's Champions League encounter away to Slavia Prague.

Max Dowman is eligible for selection as his three-game ban following his red card at Fleetwood is restricted to domestic games only. Arsenal's attempt to overturn the 16-year-old's sending-off was unsuccessful.

Terence announced his departure on Monday, November 2, 2026, through a statement shared on his social media platforms, saying his resignation took effect immediately.

In a letter addressed to the association’s chairperson and executive committee, the comedian thanked the organisation for giving him an opportunity to serve in the leadership role.

“I hereby tender my resignation as Secretary General of the Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK), effective immediately. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the Association,” he wrote.

Despite stepping down, Terence maintained that he remained committed to supporting creatives and promoting opportunities within Kenya’s digital content industry.

“My commitment to creative empowerment remains strong. I will continue supporting creators through skills development, mentorship and opportunities that promote sustainable livelihoods in Kenya’s creative economy,” he added.

Following Terence’s announcement, DCCAK issued a statement providing further details about his exit from the leadership position.

DCCAK also revealed that Joan Wanjiku Waweru had been appointed acting Secretary General following his suspension.

He is particularly known for characters such as Kamami, which have helped him establish a substantial online following.

A Loose Women panellist has made an "honest" admission about her co-stars, saying "some of us are closer" than others. Kéllé Bryan has enjoyed a varied career over the years, most notably as one of the founding members of girl group Eternal, and has also dipped her toes into soap and stage acting.

Away from the worlds of Hollyoaks and EastEnders, however, Kéllé has been a panellist on the beloved ITV talk show since 2019. Known for frank debate on the biggest talking points of the day, Loose Women is also renowned for turning fiery at times.

And with a rotating panel, it's natural for friendships to form among the women. Kéllé confirmed this in a recent interview, admitting that it's "just like in any other work scenario".

Asked if she missed her fellow panellists over the summer break, Kéllé told Heat magazine: "Absolutely, but to be honest, some of us are closer to each other than other people. Obviously, it's just like in any other work scenario.

Actress and singer Kelle Bryan explained that it was "unfortunate" because the man she'd been with had "presented" himself as "single"

She revealed that she "hooked up" with Judi Love, Brenda Edwards and Charlene White over the summer. Kéllé explained that she's been working with Brenda on behalf of her late son Jamal's charity.

Kéllé added: "I've been mentoring some young people for her during the summer. It's been amazing, just watching them progress and seeing the work that she does for the trust. It's been wonderful to be a part of."

It follows reports that fellow panellist Gloria Hunniford appeared to admit she has no plans to retire, as she marked 80 years in showbusiness on an episode of Loose Women this week.

Speaking on Monday's episode (November 2), Gloria was joined by Coleen Nolan, Ruth Langsford and Jane Moore for the tribute, which took the form of a special segment. Gloria said: "You're probably saying, 'Why doesn't she retire?"

Loose Women star Kelle Bryan revealed she'd previously been in a relationship with a "married man" during a discussion about affairs on the latest episode

She went on to say: "You have to be practical when you get to the 80s because, heaven forbid, but I've been lucky not to have anything seriously wrong.

"But if you have an illness or something, then, of course, that helps you make a decision. But at the minute, hey, you're stuck with me!"

In the episode, Gloria walked down memory lane, recalling her move to London as a mum-of-three. She admitted she never thought of herself as a "trailblazer".

She said: "I didn't think of it like that. Because I was a housewife with three children by that stage and I always thought of myself as a mum first and foremost. But here I am with this challenge, and I was excited about doing it, but I was too busy learning how to do it."

BBC viewers recently stumbled upon the 'absolutely beautiful' show (Image: BBC/The Forge)

BBC viewers have been told to 'stop everything' and watch this 'absolutely beautiful' drama.

Fans of the 2025 show accidentally stumbled upon it on iPlayer, and they claim it is 'one of the best series in a while'. It was originally released on BBC Three last April and impressively won the BAFTA TV Award for Emerging Talent: Fiction.

We are referring to Just Act Normal, a touching coming-of-age drama written by award-winning playwright Janice Okoh. The six-part show follows three siblings as they try to 'act normal' after their mother disappears, fearing they might be separated and sent into foster care if anyone found out the truth.

Rising stars Chenée Taylor (playing Tiana), Kaydrah Walker-Wilkie (as Tanika) and Akins Subair (portraying Tionne) lead the cast for this Birmingham-set series. An official synopsis teases: "When their mum disappears, Tiana, Tionne, and Tanika fight to hide the truth from the outside world in order to stay together as a family.

"As Tiana struggles to keep their regular lives afloat, Tionne displaces his grief, and Tanika tries to convince her teacher to adopt them, chaos erupts when their mum’s hapless drug dealer, Dr Feelgood, moves in."

It adds: "The series is an irreverent portrait of black working-class teenage life. A coming-of-age story of sorts. The first times, the f***-ups, and the excruciating desire to be more grown up than you’re ready to be.

"It’s a celebration of black joy, of council estates, and corner shops. Of working-class living and working-class dreams. It is human and tender, with a thumping great heart." The cast is completed by seasoned actress Romola Garai, TV stars Sam Buchanan and Ivanno Jeremiah, alongside singer Jamelia and Hollyoaks' Jennifer Metcalfe.

Although the drama flew under the radar for most BBC viewers, those who caught it upon its release were thoroughly impressed. One X user raved: "#justactnormal is one of the best @BBC dramas I've seen in a long time! Just binged the whole season. Absolutely beautiful acting, directing and writing."

Someone else shared their glowing review on IMDb, saying: "I logged onto BBC iPlayer and this was the first thing that was there on the release date. I hadn't heard anything about it, but I started watching it. This show was honestly amazing. The actors are so talented. It's one of the best things I've watched in a while."

The same person added: " It was so refreshing. It made me both laugh and cry. There were dark and heavy moments and topics, but the heaviness was always balanced with comedy in a really sensitive way. It was incredibly powerful."

A third fan added: "I need everyone to stop what they're doing and watch "Just Act Normal" on BBC iPlayer; absolutely beautiful, so funny and heart-breaking 10/10," while a fourth viewer chimed in: "Needed something short to watch and I ended up binging this show. It's quite amazing; it has a good balance of drama and comedy.

"The acting is wonderful; the storyline is intriguing and not a carbon copy of some other show you have watched."
