A California judge has approved Vivienne’s petition to drop her father's last name.
Following the hearing on 2 November, the 18-year-old now goes by ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie’ officially, rather than ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt’.
As reported by Page Six, Judge Virginia Keeny told the Los Angeles Superior Court: “There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted.”
“The Decree is signed and filed,” the order adds. “The Petitioner’s name is changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.”
Vivienne joins Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh who have taken only their mother’s surname.
Brad Pitt, 62, and Angelina Jolie, 51, share six children: Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 18.
In the petition filed in July, Vivienne lists the reason for the name change as ‘personal’, according to a court document obtained by Page Six.
“I have six very individual human beings in my home. I am so excited about all the different stages and feelings and curiosities that they go through. Why wouldn’t you be?” Jolie told PEOPLE in 2021.
“We’re supposed to help them figure out who they are. And you can’t figure out who they are if you don’t enthusiastically develop with them.”
Just two years after tying the knot with Pitt, Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, alleging that the F1 actor was abusive towards one of their kids during a private flight.
Three years on, the pair were officially divorced but their assets and child custody were still being decided.
It took until 2024 for both parties to finally reach a settlement.
One of the reasons why it took so long is because shortly after Jolie's divorce filing in 2016, Pitt was investigated by the The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) over allegations of abuse.
Both organisations dropped their investigations and didn't file any charges.
However, the former couple are still locked in an active legal battle over the French winery Château Miraval.
Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 after she sold her 50% share of the $164 million estate to Tenute del Mondo (the wine division of the Stoli Group, owned by Yuri Shefler) without his consent, claiming it violated a prior agreement.
Jolie countersued, alleging Pitt waged a vindictive campaign against her following their 2016 split.
A California court and appeals court have issued a series of rulings favoring Pitt, including ordering depositions from Stoli Group and Tenute del Mondo executives and reviving claims against Shefler in California.
Pitt's legal team has been pushing to examine Jolie's financial and tax records dating back to 2017, which her lawyers have opposed as an invasion of privacy.
The broader litigation involving the winery and the third-party buyers continues to move forward toward trial.
