Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has declared his interest in contesting the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a potentially competitive race against incumbent Johnson Sakaja.
Ruku announced his political ambitions while addressing residents of South B on Tuesday, November 3, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the capital city and transform its development agenda.
The CS argued that Nairobi needed visionary leadership, integrity and a clear commitment to improving service delivery. He noted that the city played a critical role in Kenya's economy and deserved a leader capable of addressing its longstanding challenges.
According to Ruku, Nairobi's significance extended beyond its residents because it serves as the country's capital and a major commercial hub in the region.
“Nairobi is for all Kenyans, is the capital city of our country, and must be led as such,” he stated.
He also defended his suitability for the position, reminding residents that he had previously served as an elected leader before joining the Cabinet.
“You people know very well that I was previously an elected leader. Is there any problem if I vie and get elected here in Nairobi?” he posed.
What was Geoffrey Ruku's previous political position?
Before his appointment to President William Ruto's Cabinet, Ruku served as the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North Constituency, having won the seat in the 2022 General Election on a Democratic Party of Kenya ticket.
He joined the Cabinet in March 2025 after parliamentary approval, replacing Justin Muturi as Public Service Cabinet Secretary.
His declaration comes amid shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. Sakaja recently left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The governor was formally received at ODM headquarters, Chungwa House, on Tuesday, November 3, by senior party officials, including party chairperson Gladys Wanga and Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati.
Meanwhile, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is also positioning himself for the Nairobi gubernatorial contest, setting up an increasingly competitive political battle for control of the capital.
