  • Hackers are using AI to automate cyberattacks targeting educational institutions in Africa

Hackers are using AI to automate cyberattacks targeting educational institutions in Africa

Cybercriminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to coordinate cyberattacks, with educational institutions in Africa and Latin America being among the targets, according to the new findings by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

The attacks involve the use of AI powered penetration testing frameworks known as CyberStrikeAI, which enabled attackers to automate and coordinate several stages of their operations, including network reconnaissance, credential theft, movement across compromised systems and data collection.

Kaspersky Threat Research identified the activity between September and October 2026, documenting incidents in which attackers gained access to highly privileged administrator accounts within affected organisations.

CyberStrikeAI is an open-source framework that combines a command-and-control infrastructure with a large language model (LLM). It allows human operators to set attack objectives while the AI model selects appropriate tools, generates commands and analyses the results to determine subsequent actions.

In one reconstructed case, the attackers first broke into a compromised SQL server and collected information manually before installing the tools they needed for their operation. They sat idle for two weeks, and then used the CyberStrikeAI implant to resume the intrusion.

Following deployment, the attack escalated quickly, with attackers gaining control of domain administrator accounts in three to four days. The final stage, which involved moving between computers, collecting credentials and exporting database information, was completed in less than an hour.

Despite the use of artificial intelligence, the technology did not operate directly on the victims’ computers. Instead, the AI model ran on the attackers’ server, while the implant installed on compromised machines executed commands and transmitted the results back to the command-and-control infrastructure.

Kaspersky said its security solutions detected several malicious activities during the investigations, including credential dumping, the creation of malicious scheduled tasks and suspicious network queries used to map compromised domains.

Its Endpoint Detection and Response Expert solution identified malicious behaviour on affected devices, while its network detection capabilities helped uncover CyberStrikeAI command-and-control communications.

The identified implants were classified as HEUR:HackTool.Win64.CyberStrike.gen and HEUR:HackTool.Linux.CyberStrike.gen.

“The attackers used an AI agent based on CyberStrikeAI to carry out a full attack chain and adapt their next steps within compromised networks. However, the framework still relied on familiar techniques and procedures, including discovery, credential dumping, lateral movement, and collection and exfiltration. AI changes how attackers coordinate intrusions and the speed at which they operate, but well-configured security tools such as Kaspersky EDR can still detect and help stop the techniques they use,” said Nikita Nazarov, head of Threat Exploration at Kaspersky.

Researchers also discovered Chinese-language comments within some of the scripts used during the attacks. However, Kaspersky cautioned that these findings were insufficient to establish the attackers’ identities, geographical location or affiliation with a known cybercriminal group.

The incidents highlight the growing role of artificial intelligence in cybercrime, particularly its potential to help attackers coordinate complex operations and reduce the time needed to move through compromised networks.

Kaspersky recommends that educational institutions and other organizations implement endpoint detection and response solutions to improve defenses, detect suspicious activity, monitor network communications and attempts to access sensitive credentials.

The company also recommends organizations integrate threat intelligence into security investigations, and continue to monitor, especially outside normal working hours. Where internal security teams are not able to provide 24/7 coverage, managed detection and response services can help to detect and respond to threats before they become a problem.

  • Samsung holds No. 5 spot in Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2026

Samsung holds No. 5 spot in Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2026

    Samsung Medison acquires Sonio

Samsung Electronics has been ranked fifth on Interbrand’s Best Global Brands list for the seventh consecutive year, with a brand value of US$105.2 billion.

The South Korean firm is the only Asia-based company to have stayed in the global top five every year since 2020.

According to Samsung, Interbrand’s evaluation reflected the company’s record earnings, driven by focused investment in AI semiconductors, as well as stronger AI competitiveness in its Device eXperience (DX) division and a customer-centric brand strategy under its “One Samsung” approach.

Samsung’s Device Solutions (DS) division continued to grow by supplying more high-value memory products to meet rising demand from AI. It also became the first in the industry to mass-produce and commercially ship HBM4, the latest generation of high-bandwidth memory used in AI data centres.

The DX division is building personalised AI experiences and connectivity across Samsung’s mobile devices, televisions and home appliances.

This year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold8, its eighth-generation foldable smartphone. It has a new form factor and a 4:3 display aspect ratio, which the company says redefines the foldable category. Samsung said the design has resonated strongly with younger consumers while broadening the device’s appeal across generations.

Interbrand, one of the longest-standing brand consultancies, assesses brand value each year by analysing a company’s financial performance and outlook, the brand’s influence on purchasing decisions and its competitiveness. Its evaluation also considers strategy, empathy, differentiation, customer engagement, consistency and trust.

Warning: This article contains content which some readers may find distressing

In South Florida on Sunday (1 November), all nine people onboard a private jet were killed in a crash.

The Learjet 60 erupted into a ball of flames as it hit the ground in a neighbourhood not far from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach County.

Among the passengers on board were tech tycoon Adam Robinson, 45, his wife, Helen Sharp, 40, and their two children, Emma, two, and Charlie, four.

Just days before the crash, the founder and CEO of Retention, RB2B and Moltsets made a heartbreaking admission about how well life was going to his friends.

The others onboard the small jet from Texas to the Bahamas was the children’s nanny Anita Maria Cetina; and another couple, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, as well as pilot Jeff Gregory and co-pilot Nathalia Fligueiras.

Jesse Ouellette, a friend of Robinson, told TMZ that the tech boss had just recently shared how happy he was with his life.

He had said things were ‘going too well’ as his business continued to grow and the family was loving their life in Aspen, Colorado.

Ouellette said: “His loss will be deeply felt by the software founders who knew him as a friend and colleague.

“He challenged the way things were done and was far ahead of his time. It's heartbreaking that we lost him so soon."

Federal investigators are looking into the cause of the crash as viral videos from those in the area show the aircraft plunging from the sky before hitting the ground and exploding.

It left behind fiery chunks of pavement and a crater in the road.

The relatives of the seven passengers shared a joint statement confirmed the victims’ names.

It read: “With broken hearts, our families share that Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, their children Emma and Charlie, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina were among those lost aboard the flight that went down near Greenacres, Florida, on November 1.

“Adam and Helen were devoted parents, and Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2, were the light of their lives. Helen and Adam were the love affair that will last forever. Their warmth, generosity and gift for making people feel welcome touched so many lives. Their loss will be felt deeply by all those who loved them and who they loved in return.

“Charmi and Rachel were full of joy and adventure. They loved their people fiercely, fully and without hesitation. From the moment they met, they were all in on each other and the life they were building. They are deeply loved, and we will miss them endlessly.

“Anita Maria cared for Emma and Charlie with tenderness and devotion, and she was truly part of the family. She showed us a legacy of unconditional love and devotion.”

The statement went on to say the families were ‘deeply grateful’ to emergency responders, investigators and ‘the Palm Beach County community for their care, and to everyone who has reached out with love’.

“Our hearts are also with the families of the pilots, who are grieving alongside us,” it added.

Haunting message posted by tech tycoon Adam Robinson resurfaces after he's killed in Florida plane crash

The dad who died in the horror Florida plane crash shared an online post referencing aviation accidents just months before the tragic incident.

Tech tycoon Adam Robinson was killed alongside his wife Helen and their two young children on Sunday (1 November) after the Learjet 60 they were travelling on nose-dived into a street in Palm Beach County.

Five others also perished after the aircraft exploded into a fireball upon impact, leaving a 'crater-like impact point' in the residential area.

Tributes have been pouring in for 'devoted parents' Adam and Helen, as well as their two kids Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2, who were 'the light of their lives'.

In a joint statement, the couple's loved ones said: "Helen and Adam were the love affair that will last forever. Their warmth, generosity and gift for making people feel welcome touched so many lives.

"Their loss will be felt deeply by all those who loved them and who they loved in return."

Adam – who was the founder and CEO of Retention, RB2B and Moltsets – was among those onboard the doomed Learjet 60 that was bound for the Bahamas.

His children's nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, and another couple, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr also passed away, while pilot Jeff Gregory, 55, and 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras, have also been identified as victims.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that the volatile weather conditions on Sunday are a 'major focus of the investigation'.

"We do have some evidence that there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact," board member Tom Chapman said. "We may find parts of the aircraft some distance away from the actual impact site."

    (Family Handout)

The private plane had departed from Austin, Texas, during a period of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Chilling audio of the final conversation between co-pilot Nathalia and air traffic control was publicised on Monday (2 November), which captured her making a desperate mayday call as the aircraft rapidly lost altitude.

She told the operator that they were 'going to crash into the ground', before adding: "Look outside. Holy f**k, we're out of time."

The young woman had texted her boyfriend just a few minutes prior, complaining of the flying conditions as she noted the plane was experiencing turbulence, while ice was enveloping the exterior of it.

An online post previously shared by Adam on 17 April this year has also resurfaced in wake of the tragedy over the weekend.

Six months ago, the tech boss wrote on X: You don't need to crash a plane to learn to fly…and you don't need VC to build a business."

  • Australia’s High Court hears bid to overturn under-16s social media ban

Australia’s High Court hears bid to overturn under-16s social media ban

Reddit logo is seen in a picture illustration.

Australia’s world-first social media ban for under-16s faces its first major legal test in the High Court, almost one year after taking effect.

The challenge was brought on Tuesday by online platform Reddit and Australian advocacy group Digital Freedom Project.

Reddit has highlighted a number of issues in its written submission to the court, pointing to problems enforcing the ban and a lack of scientific evidence about the harms of social media.

“The evidence so far is that the effectiveness of the ban has been limited,” Reddit’s submission reads.

Social media companies were forced to delete millions of accounts after Australia banned those aged below 16 from the likes of Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Reddit last December.

The platforms are responsible for identifying and deleting the accounts of underage users, and face hefty fines if they are found in breach of their obligations.

Reddit argued this approach was actually more dangerous, as registered accounts were governed by in-built safety features.

Material posted on many online platforms and social media sites could still be accessed without an account, Reddit said.

“Young people using other platforms without an account are also unable to be protected from exposure to particular harmful content as they previously had been,” its submission read.

Australia said its restrictions would protect young users from graphic content and online predators.

While there is a growing body of evidence about the harms of social media, Reddit argued there was no “scientific consensus”.

A team of Australia-based researchers published a study in August that found little evidence to suggest teenagers have stopped using social media despite the ban.

Digital Freedom Project, led by New South Wales politician John Ruddick, believes the ban is unconstitutional because it restricts teenagers’ ability to take part in political discourse.

“Social media is an important means of accessing news and engaging in political communication for young Australians, including children under 16,” the advocacy group argued in written submissions.

“The restriction also risks removing beneficial sources of connection, support and participation,” it added.

Digital Freedom Project, according to its website, comprises a group of Australians who are concerned about increasing government intervention and censorship in the digital space.

Reddit and the Digital Freedom Project separately announced last year they would challenge the ban.

It was unclear how long the court would take to consider the case.

The Australian government has stepped up online and social media restrictions to protect young people from pressures and risks they could be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts, according to the online regulator, eSafety Commissioner.

The government has also proposed opt-out laws which would force social media companies to give users the choice to turn off their algorithm.

Meta and its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram are facing a class action lawsuit in Australia over allegations that addictive design features are harming children and teenagers.

The class action suit was filed on behalf of eight plaintiffs who allege they were harmed by Meta while they were below the age of 18.
