HOW DP RUTO HIJACKED THE BBI CONVERSATION

Atwoli is well known for his TV theatrics, Senior Counsel Ahmednasir once labelled him as JKL’s most popular customer. As much as Kenyans have taken to ridiculing the COTU boss of late, many have forgotten that even a broken clock is right twice a day. During one of his comic performances on the second most popular TV show in the country he termed Ruto as a bright and calculative politician.

The handshake might have been born out of noble intentions but it is evident that BBI was aimed to isolate the deputy president. While the handshake was a two man affair, the BBI which is handshake’s first political baby has been a collective agreement between the Kieleweke brigade. In the recent days, it seems as if the ODM faction have been left with the burden of taking care of the not so legitimate baby. The Jubilee side occasionally gives child support albeit begrudgingly.

ODM led by Raila Odinga have tried to rush the process while Jubilee side led by President Kenyatta have always called for moderation. This is angering ODM brigade since moderation is a word that is synonymous with the hustler nation. Some have started to question the president’s commitment to the agenda. In all fairness, they cannot blame the president because building bridges did not include isolating DP Ruto, at least publicly.

When the first draft of the BBI was launched, Ruto and his team showed their discontent. The president agreed with their displeasure and said there was need for consensus. The BBI taskforce started traversing the country collecting views. No body cared to ask where they had got their views in the first place. For most Kenyans it was a win for Ruto. Raila 0 – 1 Ruto the score read.

The deputy president and the president kept off the mammoth BBI rallies. DP would quip once in a while through social media about the happenings in the country but largely kept off. Though the DP shied off physical meetings, he made sure to deploy his loyal lieutenants. Moses Kuria would start to bark and when the cameras would focus on the duo, Murkomen would go for the kill. It captivated the nation to such an extend that people were waiting for BBI rallies to be addressed by Tangatanga. They had hijacked the rallies. When the president halted political meetings, there was a sigh of relief from ODM. Ruto had been running away with their baby. They thanked the referee and went home to regroup. Beaten and dejected. Raila 0 – 2 Ruto the score read.

The Bomas BBI launch was supposed to be ODM’s moment of glory. Buoyed by Ruto’s meekness in Kisii and heroic welcome in Kisumu, Kieleweke thought they were poised to rewrite the country’s political history. They would come to muse later that maybe Ruto had been meek on purpose. He wanted to be behave well so that he could get an invite for the BBI launch to annihilate them in front of the country. Brutal Ruto. In 6,000 hostile packed room, Ruto summoned courage and addressed 50 million Kenyans. By the end of his speech, Kenyans did not want to hear anything about BBI. That day the score read, Raila 0 – 3 Ruto.

The president once again sided with his deputy. Even with Junet saying there was no room for further amendments, the document was changed further. As calculative as Ruto can be, he took all the glory for the changes. This was a man who was getting praise for a document that according to ODM members remarks was meant to isolate him. Despite Junet’s feeble attempt to attack Ruto, he could not change the embarrassing score. Raila 0 – 4 Ruto the scorecard said.

Ruto is cultivating a name for himself. When he is smiling and calling you my friend at the back of his mind he’s calculating on how to outwit you. It is commendable on the efficiency of BBI signature collection. Over 3 million signatures have allegedly been collected. Instead of letting Junet and his ODM compatriots enjoy the small victory, Ruto cruelly took away their joy. He called for a press conference and flanked by legislators threw the perfect plans into disarray. He said that Kenya needs a consensus and that there is no rush for a referendum. No one will be surprised if the president sides with him again. At the time of going to print, the score read Raila 0 – 5 Ruto.
