Form 4 Students Badly Assaults Principal

An investigation has been launched into an incident where some students from God-Bura High School in the Suba South constituency are alleged to have attacked and injured their school principal.

Officials from the Ministry of Education are looking into the matter after it was revealed that Headteacher Collins Omondi received kicks and blows from students who were angered by what they perceived as poor management of the school.

Reportedly, these students went on to break into the principal’s residence on Friday morning before assaulting him, citing reasons such as the provision of unsweetened porridge and the alleged mismanagement of the institution.

The school principal sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body. According to police reports, many students in Form 4 joined their junior counterparts in the assault.

“The students demanded that Omondi accompany them to the Magunga police station to record a statement. They wanted the principal to explain how school funds were being used,” the report stated.

Chairman of the South Suba Secondary School Heads Association, Paul Mbara, condemned the attack, stating that the law does not allow students and parents to assault teachers within the school premises.

He also mentioned that the principal suffered chest injuries, and Omondi was rushed to Magunga Level IV Hospital for medical examination before being directed to another facility for X-rays.

“Attacking teachers is not the solution to the problems in our schools. There should be alternative ways to resolve conflicts,” Mbara said, expressing concern that such incidents could adversely affect students’ academic performance.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne stated that they are investigating the matter in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

“We would like to identify those behind the students’ actions. Some parents are reported to have been involved in the incident and were seen assisting students in attacking the teacher,” Kinne said.
