Ruto Could Serve For 19 Yrs if This Proposal is Adopted

Constitutional lawyer Boni Mkangi who served as Commissioner in the nine member Committee of experts in the constitutional review has finally explained why president William Ruto could serve for 19 years.

Speaking via a report covered on Monday’s Standard publication, Mkangi argued that Ruto might start serving afresh in 2027 should Nandi senator Samson Arap Cherargei’s proposal be passed.

According to his statement, Ruto might argue in the supreme court to start his first term afresh in 2027 where he will be forced to serve for two terms of 7 years each.

” If the clause doesn’t explain properly when such a seven year term begin, through the supreme court, the sitting president could argue his term begins afresh from 2027 to another possible 14 years of 2 terms”, Said Mkangi.

His statement comes off a day after Samson Arap Cherargei presented a memorandum to the national dialogue committee seeking to increase presidential term limit to 7 years from 5 years.

His plan has however raised sharp reactions from Kenyans online and leaders affiliated to Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Coalition and Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government.

Reacting to the proposal, Narok senator Ledama Olekina and Kakamega senator Dr Boni Khalwale rubbished the move urging Cherargei to drop the bill and back Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government development plans.
