Leaked WhatsApp Chats of Senators Exposing an Ongoing Disagreement

Kenyan Senator Gloria Orwoba to face disciplinary action from the Senate Powers and Privileges Committee for allegedly disrespecting other senators, lying about sexual harassment, and other accusations.

The disciplinary action will come after a post by Kenyan blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, who leaked chats from a senators’ WhatsApp group. In the chats, Orwoba can be seen exchanging words with Catherine Mumma.

In the chats, Orwoba is reportedly abusive and disrespectful to Mumma, and she also makes unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment.

Kenyans are still awaiting if the Senate Powers and Privileges Committee will summon Orwoba to appear before today, Wednesday of Sept, 20th to answer the charges against her. If found guilty, Orwoba could be suspended from the Senate for up to six months.

The disciplinary action against Orwoba will spark a debate in Kenya about the role of social media in holding public officials accountable. Some people have argued that Nyakundi’s post should not be used as evidence against Orwoba, while others have said that the post is fair game because it was made in a public forum.

The disciplinary action against Orwoba will also being seen as a test of the Senate’s commitment to upholding its own code of conduct.
