2 POLICE OFFICERS CAUGHT IN THE ACT AT THEIR PLACE OF DUTY.

A police chief has defended the decision to give anonymity to two police officers after they were dismissed for gross misconduct for having sex with each other multiple times in different places while on duty.

The Cambridgeshire Police pair, referred to only as Pc A and Pc B ‘due to concerns about their mental health’, admitted the sexual conduct ‘occurred on a number of occasions and at differing locations’, a misconduct hearing was told.

Chief Constable Nick Dean defended the decision to keep their identity private, for their ‘welfare’.

Each case is assessed as to the level of information that is placed within the public domain,’ he said. 

‘Transparency is important in such cases, and whilst it is accepted that the specific names of officers may well be sought, it is important to consider the welfare of each officer and the specifics of each case.

‘In this case, in line with guidance, the hearing was published and importantly the outcomes, which were dismissals, were placed within the public domain.

‘It should not be lost that the most severe sanction was given to both officers for their actions which clearly did not accord with the standards that are expected of police officers, or indeed anyone within policing.

‘The message to the public is clear, that such behaviour is unacceptable and falls well below what policing expects and will not be tolerated.’  

Mr Dean said people ‘rightly expect when an officer comes on duty that they are there to protect and serve the community, not to be engaged in sexual activity which brings discredit to the service’.
