BISHOP MARGARET WANJIRU CAUGHT IN BODABODA AFFAIR

Bishop Margaret Wanjiru is now calling on the government to allow boda boda riders to operate within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
Wanjiru who is seeking the city’s gubernatorial seat in the August polls under a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket says that she will reform the boda boda sector within the first 100 days if elected governor.

“There are businesses in the CBD, we need riders, we need people to move from point A to point B. I plead on their behalf that they should also be allowed to operate within the CBD,” said Wanjiru on Sunday.

The bishop was speaking during a special mass service for Nairobi boda boda riders Nairobi at her Jesus Is Alive Ministries church, where they asked for forgiveness following the recent incident where riders sexually assaulted a female driver on Wangari Maathai Road in Nairobi.

“We are giving an opportunity to our government to institute the rightful laws without necessarily punishing these businesses because they have a lot of children to feed and children to educate,” added Wanjiru.

She further called for forgiveness of boda boda operators as the first step in what she said is a process restoring sanity in the sector.

“Today I am asking all women, and men, I know that our boda boda sector has done one or two things wrong against you but today we want to seek your forgiveness and in this forgiveness you will be healing this sector and healing our people,” stated the preacher.

Wanjiru’s comments came just a day after the government announced a suspension on the crackdown of boda boda riders.

This, according to the National Police Service (NPS), is to pave way for an imminent overhaul of the entire sector which is being conducted by the multi-sectoral committee tasked with the exercise.

“To effectively coordinate the implementation of the exercise with minimum disruptions to services offered by compliant boda boda operators, the Government has suspended the operation. This will allow the multisectoral committee coordinating it to develop a suitable implementation framework,” said police spokesperson Bruno Shioso in a statement.

The police body, however, warned that the existing prohibition of boda boda riders from the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) is still in force.
