ODM POLITICIAN DIES WHILE BEING RUSHED TO HOSPITAL

ODM nominated MCA in Taita Taveta County Assembly Joyce Mwangoji died this morning as she was being rushed to a hospital in Voi town.

Mwangoji is the sister of former Taveta legislator Mwacharo Kubo.

She becomes the third female legislator to die in office in the past year.

Beatrice Mwabili, the immediate former Wundanyi-Mbale ward representative and the only female elected MCA in the 2017 general election succumbed to gallbladder cancer in March last year while undergoing treatment in a Nairobi hospital.

In December 2019, the assembly also lost nominated MCA Anastanzia Wakesho who had been battling breast cancer for nearly four years. She died while undergoing treatment in Nairobi.

In the latest incident, assembly speaker Meshack Maganga confirmed the opposition MCA died as she was being rushed to St Joseph’s Shelter of Hope hospital in the outskirts of Voi town.

The speaker said the deceased had complained to her that she was not feeling well.

“She told me she was under medication and did not complain that it was serious,” Maganga said.

The speaker said the body of the deceased is lying at the hospital mortuary and burial preparation is underway.

Maganga led dozens of politicians to the deceased’s Ngerenyi home in Mwatate sub-county to comfort the family.

“We have lost a dedicated legislator who has been very courageous in her work,” Maganga told The Standard.

Others who mourned the deceased included Deputy Speaker Chrispus Tondoo and Majority Leader Haris Keke.

Until her death, the deceased served as the county chairperson, Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization, a member of Sauti Ya Wanawake organization, paralegal and human rights activist and defender.
